Business coaches are not consultants!

A consultant is an expert in their field.  Normally they have many years of experience, professional qualifications and a proven track record of implementing their skills.  They work on a project basis and are there to solve a specific problem.  They set up processes and get things working and then leave the client to get on with it, knowing that the system is robust enough to work without them having to come back.

The business coach’s role is to coach the business owner to solve their own problems rather than bringing in an external expert to do it, and unlike the consultant, the coach has a relationship with the business owner which may last for months, or even years.

There is a good analogy that illustrates the difference between a small business coach and a consultant:

  • A business coach will help you understand how and why you ride a bicycle, help you to determine what’s holding you back from riding properly, and jog along next to you as you ride.
  • A business consultant will explain why one bike is superior to another, teach you how to ride the bike, and if necessary, ride the bike for you.

If you have a problem within your business in a specialist area such as HR, computing or communications, or there are legal issues, the use of a consultant may be the best option.  We would always recommend getting specialist advice where appropriate to avoid bigger problems arising.
